The Planeswalking Tavern: Bring On the New Era

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

“HOW deep is your trust in Destiny?” the soothsayer asked. “Do you think you can outrun it? Do you think you can alter Fate when Fate has spoken?”

The visitor to the soothsayer’s tent dropped another coin onto the saucer with the words, “Just tell me what I want to know.”

“I am a servant of Destiny,” replied the man of clairvoyance. “Do not mistake my abilities as those that are subservient to mortal lives.”

The visitor dropped another coin onto the saucer, saying, “You’re not helping.”

A sigh escaped the soothsayer, making him shake his head. But he did say, “Very well. I bend Fate to your insignificant whim.”

The visitor now smiled and adjusted his blazer so that he was more comfortable.

The Planeswalking Tavern: Happy Merriment

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

A brand new day, a brand new sun. The star rode up its celestial rollercoaster to mark the advent of the biting winters that came with the territory.

The Planeswalking Tavern was on a short visit to this world, obtaining some cold supplies that it could not otherwise have obtained from any other plane, at least, not of comparable quality. There was one object in particular that Jéne E. sought from the frigid kingdom they now visited. Simply put, it was a crystal, and one of great and enormous value to the right buyer. Now was the right time to be stocking up on one of these, and Jéne E., ever the enterprising man, knew how to offer the right price.

The Planeswalking Tavern: Celebrate the Day

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

MONTHS have passed since the bandits’ attempt to wrench the planeswalking engine from its rightful place, and the inescapable truth lingered at the back of the throat like the echo of a bitter, acidic aftertaste. It was the truth that, from that day onwards, Captain Jéne E. Ilk would have to mistrust everyone and everything that sought to come close to him. He realised that his most profound creation, the planeswalking engine, was also his most cursed damnation.

Tavern League FAQ

Ladies and Gentlemen, to clarify abit about the League here are some FAQs:

Why is there an entry fee?
The entry fee is there so that the Organizer can provide prize support and better structure the event :)

Why should I join?
To Play more magic of course :)
Well, there's lucrative prizes such as the 100 ringgit cash prize and everyone goes back with 4 booster packs as complimentary prizes anyway :)

Must I have a partner to join?
Yes, unfortunately this event is a 2-headed Giant event and therefore it is a requirement that you have a partner.

Are there Deckbuilding restrictions?
Yes, the event will be run in the Standard Format which means only these sets are legal:
Scars of Mirrodin
Mirrodin Besieged
New Phyrexia
Magic 2012
Innistrad

Also, Both players are required to build a deck of 60 cards minimum and there may not be more than 4 copies of the same card between the 2 partners except for basic land or if the card states otherwise.

Must I be present only on Sunday?
It is not necessary to be present on all Sundays, each team has the opportunity to play every other team once a week.
If you cannot make it that Sunday, you may contact all other teams to set up games on another day so long as it is before the next Sunday. (However all games must take place in the store during store operating hours.)
All new participants in the league are allowed to play additional games every week to make up for the lost times. (Teams that support the new participants also get additional points anyway.)
Sunday's meet up is a set date that the shop sets so that we can tally the standings for the week, while it is strongly recommended that you play on Sunday it is also possible to play on other days so long as both teams agree and the shop is open :)

How many games do I get a week?/ Is there a cap on the number of points I can get a week?
Every team can only play another team once a week for points, any more than that will not contribute points to the teams.
An Example:
If there are 5 teams in the league: Every team will play 4 games a week. Each game gives a maximum of 3 points, therefore the maximum number of points a team will get that week is 12 points.

Any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask at medicontherun@gmail.com or The tavern's facebook page :)

Magic: The Gathering – Two-Headed Giant FAQ

I
n lieu of the Innistrad League that will be held at The Tavern this month of October, I thought I’ll write something related to that. This column is an explanation of some rules regarding Two-Headed Giant, a Magic variant that will be a part of that Innistrad League.

First we’ll begin with a comparison between a duel game and a Two-Headed Giant game. Don’t worry; I’ll explain them after this.

Duel (one player vs. one player)
Two-Headed Giant (two players vs. two players)
·     Each player starts with 20 life

·     Each player loses the game if he has 10 poison counters

·     Only one player may lose the game

·     Only one player may win the game

·     Matches are played best-of-three

·     Creatures attack your opponent

·     You block the opponent’s attack with your creatures

·     You can only have a maximum of 4 of each card (excluding basic lands)
·      Each team starts with 30 life

·      Each team loses the game if they have 15 poison counters

·      If one player loses the game, his entire team loses the game

·      If one player wins the game, his entire team wins the game

·      Matches are played with only one game

·      Creatures attack the opponents’ team

·      Your teammate may block the opponents’ creatures for you

·      You and your teammate can only have a maximum of 4 of each card (excluding basic lands)

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

“NAGA.”

“Naga, listen.”

The man focused his sight on the single person that stood above The Tavern, that figure shrouded in robe and the undying wind. Why was the Magus calling to him?

“I know who you are.”

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

“Naga,” Jéne E. called. “Find the Magus. I’ll assemble the guards. And you,” Jéne E. pointed at the machinist, “start going through your designs and diagrams and come up with the airships’ weaknesses. Report to me in ten minutes.”

The Captain disappeared out the door in mere seconds, followed by Naga who made use of the communication device that Jéne E. had passed to him. The machinist did what he did best, burying himself in his work in solitude.

The Planeswalking Tavern: The Hostile Air, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

SUDDEN terror, given time
Displaces all emotions that are mine
Falling long, into shadow
My heart founders, my soul’s aglow
Like the burning sun, the burning star
My soul fights the daemons near and far
Before it dies, before my demise
I shalt take ye with thee, and I shalt despise
Your eyes, those beautiful eyes

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

I need you to handle some of the promotion work for The Tavern,” Jéne E. said. “I trust you have read the details given to you?”

“Read them, stashed them up here.” Naga tapped the side of his head. “When do you want me to begin?”

“Soon enough.”

The Planeswalking Tavern: Man of Mystery, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

SOMEONE was snooping around outside the building, someone with possible malicious intent. He would peer into windows, stand on crates to get a better look through small openings, skulk in the shadows to avoid being seen, and stay silent when someone passes by.

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

NOTHING seemed to prevent the robed figure from approaching the door of the underground building. The person placed a hand on the centre of the double doors that was the entrance into the structure, chanted a spell, then retracted the hand as the doors swung themselves inwards. The figure walked into the gloomy interior of the building, leaving the doors both open and unlocked.

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

GENIE!” shouted the man. “Are the ropes secured?”

“I’ve checked them twice!” Jéne E. yelled back.

The party was in a cavern, scaling the sheer face of slippery wet rock as torrents of water poured against them. Jéne E. pulled at the anchors of the ropes, testing their strength, then shouted above the sounds of raging rivers that it was safe to climb.

Magic: The Gathering - Magic 2012

omes the time when every Magic player rejoices at the arrival of a new set. Magic 2012 brings to the table a lot of things that excite old and new players alike, and although some favourites such as Lightning Bolt and the nostalgic Giant Growth didn’t make the cut, there is still plenty of awesomeness to last us until next year.

The Planeswalking Tavern: Bad Adventure, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

THERE were many things that could have gone wrong with the expedition, and indeed many things did go wrong. The bugs were out in full force, the food grew stale, their boots got waterlogged and ripped, and the expedition leader was down with a serious case of an unknown illness.

The Planeswalking Tavern: From Alara With Love, Part 2

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

Morning arrived, and Jéne was prepared to face the day just as soon as he had had his breakfast. The meal was sent up to his room and it was complemented, strangely, by an origami piece in the shape of a dragon. Jéne pondered the possibilities that this was a letter, decided it was so, and went ahead unfolding the beautiful design.

The Planeswalking Tavern: From Alara With Love, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

CONTRARY to popular belief, there was only one Planeswalking Tavern. And contrary to even more belief, there was only one Peddler who ran the business.

In his opinion, what better business was there than to provide planeswalking services to those that needed them? Plus, with every world visited, a new trinket would be added to his growing repertoire of collector items, which he could easily barter for a handsome price.

The Planeswalking Tavern: The Machinists, Part 2

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

NEXT morning the man and woman had breakfast together in the dining hall and they talked about all sorts of things that were of interest to only people such as them. They shared diagrams of inventions and even tried to outplay the other with what they each had invented. It was, for those that understood the scene, a lovely sight.

The Tavern Planeswalks

Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has spoken that on a day not too far from today the tavern shall planeswalk!!
For all those who wish to witness this phenomenon and join the crew on that day, the 'Walk will happen on the 29th of June and will end on the 1st of July.
In lieu of the Great 'Walk, the Tavern will be offloading some pieces of furniture at very low prices. We welcome all fellow 'walkers to come and bid for the furniture to enhance their stature and also prevent us from having to move the objects. the target of the offloading is to empty out the current locale.

IT was New Year’s Eve on this world, much to the delight of The Tavern’s patrons. Though the name of the world itself was lost to them, the celebratory mood permeated the air like the sweet aroma of good hearty stew and everyone felt eager to join in the partying.

Everyone except a small man who wished to not be named.

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

WHEN he finally left his room, he didn’t make for the bar but instead went to the information counter near the front entrance and spoke to one of the receptionists there. She was a helpful woman and her male counterpart wasn’t any less. The visitor asked them about employment at The Tavern and wondered if there was anything he should be worried about. The receptionists were confident in the abilities of the Magus to keep them safe, as well as the measures that the Peddler had put into place.

The Planeswalking Tavern: Too Good To Be True, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

SEVERAL years had passed since the inception of The Tavern, and the business had grown from small to medium to a relatively large enterprise. The man in charge of this business was known by many as ‘the Peddler’ or if you were being informal, you could call him ‘Genie’. The Peddler was a happy man with laughing eyes and a curious smile, known for his jokes as well as his merchant prowess and discipline. Though he owned The Tavern, that didn’t mean he did not see reasons to expand his business and diversify. He had a chain of businesses on a selected number of worlds, ranging from engineering to publishing to real estate, all of which were carefully controlled and monitored. How a single person was able to maintain order across such a vast expanse was a secret only the Peddler knew.

THE Magus?” Zarin exclaimed. “Is that really you? What’s going on? Did I break a law?”

The Magus, highest authority of The Tavern, looked to his left to the bartender. The staff member said, “Sir Zarin, it has come to our attention that you are a performer of considerable skill and determination. It has also come to our attention that business hasn’t been fair to you lately. We have a proposition to make to you. We would like to hire your services and have you work here at The Tavern.”

The Planeswalking Tavern: Enter the Entertainer, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

ON a normal day, Zarin the Entertainer would be basking in the warm glory of admiration from his audience as he ended his performance, right about this time. Today was a different yarn to spin and so he sat at the bar of The Tavern, contemplating what went wrong.

“What went wrong, of course, was that no one turned up. Why? Why me?  Did I do something to anger the Universe or summat?”

The bartender silently slid a glass across the counter, stopping it in front of the dejected master of entertainment, and flipped a bottle over his shoulder to fill up the crystal-based tumbler.

“Maybe it was a rival,” said the soft-spoken man behind the marble countertop. “It’s a cut-throat industry, surely.”

The Planeswalking Tavern: The Magus Battles, Part 2

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

BUSINESS was brisk. Patrons clamoured at the observation deck, at windows, doors, and any other place that gave them a good view of the action. Already spells were slung and minions summoned by the planeswalkers to provide them some advantage over their opponents. It wasn’t so much a brutal battle but a delicate contest of wills, deception, and trickery. Each of the six combatants seemed to make use of blue mana, the mana of mental acumen and intellectual superiority, to a certain degree. Thus what would have otherwise been a glorified catfight was a pretty ballet of balance danced by the six performers. Even the more posh patrons to The Tavern clinked their glasses as they cheered on the combatants.

The Planeswalking Tavern: The Magus Battles, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

WHERE are we going, Genie?” the young man inquired.

Jéne E. Ilk didn’t give an immediate answer. Instead he grasped the steering wheel of his ship, the building known as The Tavern, and spun the circle around, letting it roll to the left under the applied impetus. He and the other men on the ‘bridge’ of the ‘ship’ were dressed in naval attire, something that had never taken place before.

“Welcome to Halloween,” Jéne E. said. “I mean this world’s equivalent of Halloween.”

“But where are we going?” the young man asked again. “Surely you’re not going to let the planeswalking engine pick a random destination?”

Jéne E. smiled.

“Genie, you can’t be serious?” the young man exclaimed in horror.

“Oh, I wouldn’t do that,” Jéne E. said in the most disarming manner. “No. Today, we’re going to watch good old fashioned gladiatorial massacre between feuding planeswalkers.” He stepped close to a map hung vertically from a frame and pointed at a spot. “Across the Blind Eternities is a world considered by many planeswalkers as neutral ground, the perfect place to settle any disagreements. We’ll get there when we get there.”

The young man asked, “And the point to all this is?”

The Planeswalking Tavern: Disbelief at the Barbeque, Part 2

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

THE planeswalking engine kicked into gear after the caravan had passed by The Tavern. Strong winds enveloped the building, but a magic shield prevented the rushing air from disturbing its insides. In complete comfort, the man and the woman gazed past the torrents of air to see the meadow outside the building melt away, to be replaced with that of a beach with pure white sand. Immediately after the air died, a group of holidaymakers rushed out of The Tavern and dived straight into the midday sea.

On the observation deck the woman watched in silence as she chewed her food. The man, on the other hand, was frozen in time, completely speechless, and hushed to the nth degree. The couple stood there without movement for an entire minute without anything disturbing them. Then a waiter went up to them and offered the husband and wife a place at an empty table because the barbeque was about to begin.

“Give us a minute,” the woman said.

The Planeswalking Tavern: Disbelief at the Barbeque, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

SOMEHOW the surroundings of The Tavern seemed both familiar and alien at the same time. It was like the building had moved a number of metres in a certain direction so that the scenery outside the window was different.

“What the heck just happened?” the man exclaimed to his partner.

The woman seated at the same table replied with, “We shifted off the road. There must be a caravan coming.”

“How?” the man asked. “What do you mean ‘shifted’?”

“The building can move,” answered the woman. “That’s the whole reason we’re visiting The Tavern. To experience travel.”

“That’s a joke. Buildings don’t move.”

“But you saw it yourself, didn’t you?”

“That must have been a magical trick. Someone put up a magical barrier on the window and changed what the outside looks like.”

The woman picked up the cherry from her drink as she said, “Disbelievers are going to disbelieve. Why not take a walk outside and see for yourself?”

“I think I will. Hah! Let’s see this moving tavern do the tango while we’re here.”

After finishing their drinks, the man and the woman exited the main archway of The Tavern and walked around the building. The dirt road that the building had hitherto situated itself upon was not to one side of The Tavern, and indeed there was a caravan moving down the road.

The man said, “A magical trick. The building shifted a few metres. A cheap shot.”

The woman looked up at the bright sky to gauge the time before she said, “We better get inside. The Tavern is due to travel to another world in mere minutes.”

This I’ve got to see,” the man announced and performed a grin.

The couple went up to the observation deck on the second floor. While the man stood by the balustrade, eagerly awaiting a miracle, the woman got herself a bag of munchies before approaching her partner.

“Ten gold pieces says it’s just a fancy illusion,” the man said.

The woman shook his hand with the words, “Just be a good sport and pay up when you lose.”

A hearty laugh escaped the man.

The Planeswalking Tavern: The Thief and the Nurse, Part 2

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

SHE picked up a glass of drink for herself as she said, “You’re quick. I’m scared now.”

“Where are we?”

“We… are… somewhere safe. Where exactly, only the Magus knows.”

Prolonged silence came into play, during which the woman held her glass in one hand and a relatively large scalpel in the other. Even when she had finished her drink, the man didn’t seem all too interested in moving.

“Well?”

“What?”

“Are you going to lie there all day?”

“What am I supposed to do? I bet there’re guards outside. I’ll get caught if I do anything.”

“You’re already caught.”

“Excellent deduction. Now let me wither away in peace.”

The woman shook her head in what could be regret for saving this man, then went to the door and knocked on it. The sound of heavy boots walking in made the man jump in terror. The guards were real, and one of them appeared very blatantly to be the captain. The woman slipped out, not wanting to have any part in the interrogation. As she closed the door after her, the captain held up one of the items the thief had stolen, nodding as though asking for an explanation from the man who cowered in a corner of the room.

The Planeswalking Tavern: The Thief and the Nurse, Part 1

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

THERE were no witnesses to the theft, but the young man had difficulty leaving the scene when the only way out had automatically secured itself. Something prevented the gate from opening, so the man found himself trapped inside a massive vault full of all the riches he could ever wish for in the world.

With the skill of a master the man produced a lock-picking toolkit and set himself to work on the gate’s many locks. After enough time had passed, he undid the last lock and pulled the heavy gate inwards. It moved. The thief slipped through the opening and proceeded to close the gate and relock the bolts with his toolkit.

While he busied himself with this task, the sound of thunder shattered his hearing and a powerful gust of wind swept him off his feet, knocking his tools from his grasp. He scuttled to save some of them and disposed them into deep pockets, only to look up to see a sight to behold.

The empty cavern before him was suddenly occupied by… a building. From the looks of it, it appeared to be a rest-house of sorts. Merry songs and sounds of laughter could be heard from within, and the smell of fine food and wine began to waft through the enclosed space.

Perhaps out of terror, the thief moved very slowly, hugging the walls of the cavern away from the building. His scattered tools lay forgotten as his thoughts rumbled chaotically in his head.

What… is… going on here?

A small parade exited one of the building’s entrances. The men marched in tandem and formation, brandishing standards and banners as though their affiliated organisation was the greatest in the world. They beat drums and blew trumpets as their passage took them away from the vault, the party completely ignoring the thief who even now was quaking in his boots.

A firework shot up from the tallest point of the building and hit the roof of the cavern, exploding into a million and one colours and shapes. The sparks then coalesced into the shape of a large portal against the stone roof, allowing a pair of large eyes to peer down from the ceiling onto the environment below.

The thief fainted.

* * *

There was coldness on his forehead, and he could guess that whoever rescued him had tried to lower his temperature. He was too afraid to open his eyes, yet he was too curious not too. He could hear the sounds being made by someone moving about in the room. Something was poured into some kind of container. Some light fell over his eyes, making his squint despite his eyes being closed. Must be moonlight, judging from how cold it felt.

“Open your eyes,” a woman’s voice said. “We both know you’re awake.”

“Mmmbph.”

“What?”

“Nnngh!”

After a moment of profound reasoning, the woman went to the bedridden man and tapped a pressure point, then quickly retreated to the centre of the room. The thief squealed some musical note before rolling over and falling face first onto the floor. There he stayed for a full minute.

“I didn’t kill you,” the woman said.

She occupied herself by sharpening her surgical tools, just so she had an excuse to hold them. The man was a stranger. There was no telling who he was and what he would do. She felt unsafe save the comfort obtained from having blades in her hands.

Then the man lifted an arm and crawled back into the bed. He grabbed at the sheets and pulled them over him.

“Why is it so cold?” he said. “It should be sweltering underground.” The woman needn’t answer for he remembered one special property of this building, and so he said, “We travelled to a different place already?”

She picked up a glass of drink for herself as she said, “You’re quick. I’m scared now.”

Magic: The Gathering – New Phyrexia

t’s that time again. A new set’s release (or pre-release) came and went, and with it came a host of toys for our grubby little gaming hands to get a hold of.

Most of them are recurring themes and remain the same, like infect, living weapon, metalcraft, and proliferate, but one of the more interesting innovations to come around this time (in my opinion) is Phyrexian mana.

Phyrexian mana comes in the same five flavours as normal mana; white, blue, black, red, and green. That means that they are payable like normal mana, which is a good thing.

Now, the difference between Phyrexian mana and normal mana is that Phyrexian mana can be paid through an alternate way. You can pay 2 life instead of paying the cost for a Phyrexian mana symbol.

Let’s look at an example.

Porcelain Legionnaire costs 2 colourless mana and 1 White Phyrexian mana. You can either pay 2 colourless and 1 White to cast it, or you can take the cheap way and pay 2 mana plus 2 life. Taking the cheap route reduces your life total a bit, but it lets you bring out a 3-power creature with first strike as quickly as turn 1 or 2, depending on your deck. That’s nothing to laugh about.

Multiple symbols of Phyrexian mana work the same.

Moltensteel Dragon can be paid through the full mana cost (4 colourless and 2 Red) or you can opt to pay 4 colourless and 4 life, bringing down this big flyer with increasable power on turn 3. The cost of increasing its power can be paid the same way as paying Phyrexian mana in the casting cost. You either pay 1 Red to buff the power, or you can pay 2 life. You can pay more than once if you really like dragons.

One of the recurring themes throughout the New Phyrexia set is Golems. Many cards produce Golem tokens and even give bonuses to said Golems.

All ‘Splicer’ cards allow you to put Golem tokens into play on top of bestowing some ability to your Golems. Other cards also help you generate a Golem army, but I’ll let you discover them on your own. More fun that way.

Now for something different. During all the Magic tutorials on this site, we have seen artifacts only as colourless cards. Artifacts can actually be coloured, and have actually been coloured, and are now coloured again thanks to the Phyrexians.

Porcelain Legionnaire is actually a white card because it has the White Phyrexian mana symbol. Phyrexian Metamorph is a blue card because it has the Blue Phyrexian mana symbol.

One thing to note is this: cards are coloured based on their mana symbols, not on what type there are. So artifacts are colourless based on their colourless mana symbols, not because they are artifacts. If an artifact sudden had a Green mana symbol, then it would be green. If it had a Black or Red mana symbol, it would be black or red.

That’s all for this guide to New Phyrexia. For more information on New Phyrexia’s recurring mechanics, read the Magic: The Gathering Tutorials Week 12 and 13.

Till next time, sayonara.

The Planeswalking Tavern: Introduction, Part 2

This is a series of vignettes centred around a fictional Tavern in the Magic Multiverse.

Her sword and dagger was sheathed and not another word was said on her part. She headed back into the building while the man continued to harass her with words demanding an explanation. Seeing that he wasn’t getting one, the man sunk back in and closed the window.

A group of adventurers passed her on their way out of The Tavern when she reached the entryway. She asked one of them what world this was but the man said he had no clue. All he knew was that there were riches to be had.

“The early bird gets the worm.”

Those were his last words before he ran up to his adventuring party, leaving the woman to dwell in her confusion.

She tried again, this time directing her inquiry to one of The Tavern’s staff. A young man at the reception counter became her target and she repeated her question.

“This world?” the man asked back. “I can’t really tell, but you are free to wander around for the next few days. We won’t be travelling to another world for a while.”

The woman said, “May I know why?”

“The planeswalking engine needs to cool down after a certain number of hops. Once all the maintenance works are out of the way, we’ll be able to travel again to other worlds.”

“So we’re stuck here for a few days?”

“Not stuck per se. This world was selected by democratic voting of The Tavern’s tenants. It was their choice to come here. And if you need to go back in the very near future, you can always acquire the services of individual planeswalkers. The fee may be a bit steep, but it all depends on who you talk to.”

Who you talk to, she mused in her head. So she wondered, who’s in charge here? The Magus would be pretty high up the command chain, but was it him, or was there a higher power?

Good news was that her companion was still seated at her table when the woman got back to the main hall. Perhaps the girl had too much to drink because her head was on her arms, and her arms were on the tabletop. The woman picked up a coat that was slung over the girl’s shoulders and draped it over a chair. It was a hot day, so much so that the fires in the hearths had been reduced. The interior of The Tavern was so much cooler than the outside, but still the woman went to get herself a drink.

Something happened at the drink counter. It wasn’t the bar itself or the bartender, but she could catch something foreign out of the corners of her eyes every now and then. Like someone was watching her.

When the bartender passed her the drink, she took a moment to swirl the liquid within the wood and metal container. Then she realised what it was. It was a reflection of someone, a hooded person. She had been seeing it on the glass and the liquids at the edges of her vision, only now getting a solid picture as her drink moved in a circular pattern within the cup.

The figure looked very similar to the Magus, except something was off. Either that, or she just couldn’t remember how the Magus looked like with great detail. She only saw him for a few seconds, after all.

She sipped her drink on her way back to her table, completely aware of her action, that she might be taking a bite out of the Magus’ magical reflection. She half expected to see part of the image gone when she pulled the cup away from her lips. Instead the reflection never emerged no matter how hard she swirled the drink, no matter how much she disturbed the surface of the liquid.

The Magus had probably retreated back to his secluded chamber of meditation, she thought. They always do.

The girl back at the table had lifted her head from her arms and still under her stupor, she said, “How did the hunt go?”

The woman dropped herself heavily into her chair and fumed. The girl took that as an answer and asked no more.

>End of story.

Winter has hit the Empire of Rokugan hard, and to make matters worse Earthquakes and Tsunamis are hitting Japan too. Is the Path of the Destroyer leading it towards Earth? We do not know.
However, the Divine Empress has requested that we offer help and kindly services to the nation which had inspired the Rokugani Existence in its time of peril.
Therefore humbled by her Empress's requests, we at the Tavern have decided to host a tournament and offer all profits from that tournament to Charitable organizations that are channeling help into Japan. Up to now we are trying to discuss with the Red Crescent society of Malaysia, but we are open to any society that is legitimately offering help.
Our problem? Not enough visible support.
Therefore, we would like to invite all players to participate in the event that would be hosted this saturday 26/3/2011
